Getting to Know Allah
Trees to Impress a God
With so many different types of trees on earth and so few trees mentioned in the Koran, it is assumed that those who are worthy of Allah’s notice are the most impressive.
The palm tree, the olive tree, the lotus tree, the acacia, a "gourd tree" and perhaps the banana tree, are the only variety of trees found on earth which Allah mentions by name in the Koran; with palm being the most often mentioned by a wide margin.
In five translations consulted, two, Mohsin Khan’s and Shakir’s, interpret “talh” to mean banana tree. In Fakhry’s, talh (acacia in Yemeni Arabic) is taken to be the genus acacia which does not contain any banana growing trees or scrubs.
The banana tree was first cultivated in the Mediterranean region around the year 650. The Prophet died in 632.
Unless it’s another miracle of the Koran that Allah was aware of the eminent arrival of banana cultivation in the Middle East, His Messenger was unlikely to be familiar with the fruit. And even if he was, having heard about it during his travels, it is questionable that he would have favoured the propagation of a Dark Age equivalent of Donovan's Electrical Banana among believers by having it mentioned in the Koran, considering the Prophet's aversion to phallic symbols and his legendary prudishness.
God’s Messenger was even worried about flutes as phallic symbols. He warned believers about the seductive power of musical instruments which resembled a man's penis, such as a flute, into which you blew or used your fingers to coax out a tune. This is why he banned the playing of all wind instruments.
Acacias (or banana?) trees are one of the rewards of the people of heaven, along with the lotus tree.
56:27 As for the Companions of the Right (people in heaven); and behold the Companions of the Right?
56:28 They are in the midst of thornless (sic) Lotus trees,
56:29 And braided acacias,
There is one extraordinary lotus tree in heaven, whose blossoms may be even unknown to Allah. This lotus tree marks the farthest boundary of the seventh level of Paradise, and near which the Prophet is said to have seen the angel Gabriel.
53:13 He has indeed seen him (Gabriel) a second time;
53:14 By the Lotus Tree of the outermost limit.
53:15 Close by it is the Garden of Refuge.
53:16 As the Lotus Tree was covered by that which covers it;
Tree grow big, really big, in Paradise:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, "There is a tree in Paradise (which is so big and huge that) if a rider travels in its shade for one hundred years, he would not be able to cross it."
It is not known if Allah kept the infamous tree of Adam and his wife's fame, the “Tree of Immortality”. As in the Book of Genesis, the type of tree is not mentioned in the Koran. There was no apple tree in Genesis and there is no apple tree in the Koran.
Allah does not initially name the tree that produces olive oil and olives but He will tell you where you can find it, revelation 23:20.
23:18 And We send down water from heaven in measure, then lodge it in the ground, although we are Able to allow it to drain away.
23:19 Then through it We produce for you gardens of palm trees and vines, from which you get many fruits whereof you eat.
23:20 And a tree (the olive tree) growing out of Mount Sinai that produces oil and condiments for eaters.
A by-product of the fruit of the olive tree powers Allah’s Light.
24:35 Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His light is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a glass, the glass is like a glittering star. It is kindled from a blessed olive tree, neither of the East nor the West. Its oil will almost shine, even if no fire has touched it. Light upon light, Allah guides to His Light whomever He pleases and gives the examples to mankind. Allah has knowledge of everything.
All conifers, evergreen and such are lumped into a general category of “green trees” whose main use is as firewood.
36:80 It is He Who produces fire from green trees for you; and behold you are kindling flames from it.
Hell has one tree. The Tree of Zaqqum can be found in the depth of Allah’s Hell. Its unnamed fruit, when eaten, cooks your stomach from the inside.
44:43 The Tree of Zaqqum (the Tree of Bitterness) will certainly be
44:44 The food of the sinner.
44:45 Like molten lead, which boils in the bellies;
44:46 Like boiling water.
Trees, with perhaps the assistance of a strong wind, like everything else in Allah’s creation (except for some stubborn human beings), bow down to Him.
55:6 And the shrubs (or stars) and the trees prostrate themselves.
22:18 Have you not seen that to Allah bows down whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on earth, as well as the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the beasts, the trees and many of the people? And for many the punishment has been decreed. And he whom Allah humiliates, will have no one to honour him. Allah does whatever He pleases.
If trees were pens:
31:27 Were all trees on earth so many pens and the sea, coupled by seven other seas, supplying them with ink, Allah’s Words would not be exhausted. Allah is, indeed, All-Mighty and Wise.
