Judgement Day - Omens

Sayings and Deeds of the ProphetMuhammad expected Judgement Day to occur during his lifetime or shortly after his death.

Narrated Sahl bin Sad As-Sa'idi:

Allah's Apostle, holding out his middle and index fingers, said, "My advent and the Hour are like this (or like these)," namely, the period between his era and the Hour is like the distance between those two fingers, i.e., very short.

Bukhari 63.221

The believers will have to fight and slaughter the Jews before the blessed Hour is established. Another hadith about the genocide of Jews as a prerequisite to Allah bringing about Judgment Day.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say, "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Bukhari 52.177

The following hadiths may be a reference to the Huns and other newcomers from the East who challenged Roman rule. Many became Muslims and were no longer a factor as far as Muhammad’s End of Times prophecies were concerned, leaving only the Jews as the people to be ruthlessly dealt with before Allah calls it quits on the human race.

Narrated Amr bin Taghlib:

The Prophet said, "One of the portents of the Hour is that you will fight with people wearing shoes made of hair; and one of the portents of the Hour is that you will fight with broad-faced people whose faces will look like shields coated with leather."

Bukhari 52.178

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Turks; people with small eyes, red faces, and flat noses. Their faces will look like shields coated with leather. The Hour will not be established till you fight with people whose shoes are made of hair."

Bukhari 52.179

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till you fight with the Khudh and the Kirman from among the non-Arabs. They will be of red faces, flat noses and small eyes; their faces will look like flat shields, and their shoes will be of hair."

Bukhari 56.788

Judgement Day won’t happen until all the good people have died.

Narrated Mirdas Al-Aslami:

The Prophet said, "The righteous (pious people will depart (die) in succession one after the other, and there will remain (on the earth) useless people like the useless husk of barley seeds or bad dates."

Bukhari 75.442

Faith is believing that the whole thing won't start until a slave gives birth to her master and “shepherds of black camels” have developed an interest in erecting tall buildings.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

One day while the Prophet was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel came and asked, "What is faith?"

Allah's Apostle replied, "Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection."

Then he further asked, "What is Islam?"

Allah's Apostle replied, "To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan."

Then he further asked, "What is Ihsan (perfection)?"

Allah's Apostle replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you."

Then he further asked, "When will the Hour be established?"

Allah's Apostle replied, "The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its portents.

1. When a slave (lady) gives birth to her master.

2. When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of higher buildings.

And the Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah."

The Prophet then recited: "Verily, with Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour." (31:34)

Then that man (Gabriel) left and the Prophet asked his companions to call him back, but they could not see him.

Then the Prophet said, "That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion."

Abu 'Abdullah said: He (the Prophet) considered all that as a part of faith.

Bukhari 2.47

Judgement Day will not start until a large fire is visible throughout the Hijaz (or Hejaz), a more than 100,000 square-mile region of present-day Saudi Arabia centred on Mecca and Medina, the home of Islam.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established till a fire will come out of the land of Hijaz, and it will throw light on the necks of the camels at Busra."

Bukhari 88.234

Before the onset of the inferno, a man from Yemen (Qahtan) will be seen driving people like sheep.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established till a man from Qahtan appears, driving the people with his stick."

Bukhari 88.233

With forty females for every male, the End Times will be the best of times for rational women-loving men, except for all the earthquakes and an increase in homicides.

Narrated Abu Musa:

The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "A time will come upon the people when a person will wander about with gold as Zakat and will not find anybody to accept it, and one man will be seen followed by forty women to be their guardian because of scarcity of men and great number of women."

Bukhari 24.495

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until (religious) knowledge will be taken away (by the death of religious learned men), earthquakes will be very frequent, time will pass quickly, afflictions will appear, murders will increase and money will overflow amongst you."

Bukhari 17.146

In another hadith, the stakes are raised: it will be fifty women for every man.

Narrated Anas:

I will narrate to you a Hadith and none other than I will tell you about after it. I heard Allah's Apostle saying: From among the portents of the Hour are (the following):

1. Religious knowledge will decrease (by the death of religious learned men).

2. Religious ignorance will prevail.

3. There will be prevalence of open illegal sexual intercourse.

4. Women will increase in number and men will decrease in number so much so that fifty women will be looked after by one man.

Bukhari 3.81

At least four of the following six signs have come to pass:

Narrated Auf bin Mali:

I went to the Prophet during the Ghazwa (battle) of Tabuk while he was sitting in a leather tent.

He said, "Count six signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will afflict you (and kill you in great numbers) as the plague that afflicts sheep, the increase of wealth to such an extent that even if one is given one hundred Dinars, he will not be satisfied; then an affliction which no Arab house will escape, and then a truce between you and Bani Al-Asfar (i.e. the Byzantines) who will betray you and attack you under eighty flags. Under each flag will be twelve thousand soldiers."

Bukhari 53.401

More signs some of which you may already be aware.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established

(1) till two big groups fight each other whereupon there will be a great number of casualties on both sides and they will be following one and the same religious doctrine,

(2) till about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear, and each one of them will claim that he is Allah's Apostle,

(3) till the religious knowledge is taken away (by the death of Religious scholars),

(4) earthquakes will increase in number,

(5) time will pass quickly,

(6) afflictions will appear,

(7) Al-Harj, (i.e. killing) will increase,

(8) till wealth will be in abundance - so abundant that a wealthy person will worry lest nobody should accept his Zakat (charity), and whenever he will present it to someone, that person (to whom it will be offered) will say, 'I am not in need of it',

(9) till the people compete with one another in constructing high buildings,

(10) till a man when passing by a grave of someone will say, 'Would that I were in his place',

(11) and till the sun rises from the West. So when the sun will rise and the people will see it (rising from the West) they will all believe (embrace Islam) but that will be the time when: (As Allah said,) 'No good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not before, nor earned good (by deeds of righteousness) through its Faith.' (6:158)

And the Hour will be established while two men spreading a garment in front of them but they will not be able to sell it, nor fold it up; and the Hour will be established when a man has milked his she-camel and has taken away the milk but he will not be able to drink it; and the Hour will be established before a man repairing a tank (for his livestock) is able to water (his animals) in it; and the Hour will be established when a person has raised a morsel (of food) to his mouth but will not be able to eat it."

Bukhari 88.237

To save yourself and your religion during the End Times, flee to the mountains and the valleys with your sheep.

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

Allah's Apostle said, "A time will come that the best property of a Muslim will be sheep which he will take on the top of mountains and the places of rainfall (valleys) so as to flee with his religion from afflictions."

Bukhari 2.18

Where the afflictions will come from:

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar:

I saw Allah's Apostle pointing towards the east saying, "Lo! Afflictions will verily emerge hence; afflictions will verily emerge hence where the (side of the head of) Satan appears."

Bukhari 54.499

Could suicide bombers be a harbinger of Judgement Day?

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "Time will pass rapidly, good deeds will decrease, and miserliness will be thrown (in the hearts of the people), and the Harj (will increase)."

They asked, "What is the Harj?"

He replied, "(It is) killing (murdering), (it is) murdering (killing)."

Bukhari 73.63

Many of those murdered will undoubtedly be young people, young believers in fact, killed on orders from old men.

Narrated Ali:

I heard the Prophet saying, "In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. They will give good talks, but they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out of its game, their faith will not exceed their throats. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection."

Bukhari 61.577

In the Koran, the moon and the sun, which occupy the same orbit, will collide during Allah’s End Times extravaganza .

75:6 He asks: “When is the Day of Resurrection coming?”

75:7 Then, when the sight is dazzled;

75:8 And the moon is eclipsed;

75:9 And the sun and the moon are joined together;

75:10 Man will say on that Day; “Where is the escape?”

75:11 No, there shall be no escape.

This may explain Muhammad’s alarm at the onset of eclipses.

Narrated Abu Musa:

The sun eclipsed and the Prophet got up, being afraid that it might be the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment). He went to the Mosque and offered the prayer with the longest Qiyam, bowing and prostration that I had ever seen him doing. Then he said, "These signs which Allah sends do not occur because of the life or death of somebody, but Allah makes His worshipers afraid by them. So when you see anything thereof, proceed to remember Allah, invoke Him and ask for His forgiveness."

Bukhari 17.167

A breech in the mythical wall separating the mythical tribes of Gog and Magog from the rest of us, in both the hadiths and the Koran, is an important harbinger of Judgement Day, "the true promise" in the following verse:

21:96 Until Gog and Magog are let loose, and they slink away from every quarter. 21:97 Then the true promise will draw near; and, behold, the eyes of the un-believers are staring [and they will say]: “Woe to us! We were heedless of this; no, we were wrongdoers.”

Visions of a breach in the wall were not only transmitted to Muhammad while he was asleep but in lucid visions, such as the one he experienced while riding his camel around the Ka’ba.

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

Allah's Apostle performed the Tawaf (around the Ka'ba while riding his camel, and every time he reached the corner (of the Black Stone) he pointed at it with his hand and said, "Allahu Akbar."

Zainab said: The Prophet said, "An opening has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this and this," forming the number 90 (with his thumb and index finger).

Bukhari 63.215

The Doctor Doolittle effect!

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Once Allah's Apostle offered the morning prayer and then faced the people and said, "While a man was driving a cow, he suddenly rode over it and beat it. The cow said, 'We have not been created for this, but we have been created for sloughing.'

On that the people said astonishingly, 'Glorified be Allah! A cow speaks!'"

The Prophet said, "I believe this, and Abu Bakr and Umar too, believe it, although neither of them was present there. While a person was amongst his sheep, a wolf attacked and took one of the sheep. The man chased the wolf till he saved it from the wolf, where upon the wolf said, 'You have saved it from me; but who will guard it on the day of the wild beasts when there will be no shepherd to guard them except me (because of riots and afflictions)?'"

The people said surprisingly, "Glorified be Allah! A wolf speaks!"

The Prophet said, "But I believe this, and Abu Bakr and Umar too, believe this, although neither of them was present there."

Bukhari 56.677

Take precautions to avoid unfinished business or surprises when the big Day comes, such as taking on of the sins of your brother.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever has wronged his brother, should ask for his pardon (before his death), as (in the Hereafter) there will be neither a Dinar nor a Dirham. (He should secure pardon in this life) before some of his good deeds are taken and paid to his brother, or, if he has done no good deeds, some of the bad deeds of his brother are taken to be loaded on him (in the Hereafter)."

Bukhari 76.541

An unmistakable clue that Judgement Day is at hand is the sun ris-ing in the West, but by then it will be too late to believe.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the West: and when the people see it, then whoever will be living on the surface of the earth will have faith, and that is (the time) when no good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not before."

Bukhari 60.159

The sun will rise in the West and be replaced by the head of the devil.

Narrated Abu Masud:

The Prophet pointed with his hand towards Yemen and said twice, "Faith is there," and then pointed towards the East, and said, "Verily, sternness and mercilessness are the qualities of those who are busy with their camels and pay no attention to their religion, where the two sides of the head of Satan will appear," namely, the tribes of Rabl'a and Muqar.

Bukhari 63.223

Things will get so bad that you will wish you were dead.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till a man passes by a grave of somebody and says, 'Would that I were in his place.'"

Bukhari 88.231

Perhaps the most bizarre spectacle that will signal the Hour is truly at hand is the jiggling of some women's buttocks.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established till the buttocks of the women of the tribe of Daus move while going round Dhi-al-Khalasa."

Dhi-al-Khalasa was the idol of the Daus tribe which they used to worship in the pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance.

Bukhari 88.232

The appearance of a thin-legged Ethiopian man come to destroy the holiest shrine in Islam may also be a precursor to Judgement Day.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "DhusSuwaiqatain (the thin legged man) from Ethiopia will demolish the Ka'ba."

Bukhari 26.666

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

The Prophet said, "As if I were looking at him, a black person with thin legs plucking the stones of the Ka'ba one after another."

Bukhari 26.665

The last to die:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The people will leave Medina in spite of the best state it will have, and none except the wild birds and the beasts of prey will live in it, and the last persons who will die will be two shepherds from the tribe of Muzaina, who will be driving their sheep towards Medina, but will find nobody in it, and when they reach the valley of Thaniyat-al-Wada', they will fall down on their faces dead."

Bukhari 30.98

Ad-Dajjal and Jesus

No narration about the End Times would be complete without mentioning the coming of the false messiah, Ad-Dajjal. Even Muhammad sought protection in his prayers from the malevolent messiah’s influence.

Narrated Aisha:

The Prophet used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness and geriatric old age, from all kinds of sins and from being in debt; from the affliction of the Fire and from the punishment of the Fire and from the evil of the affliction of wealth; and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of poverty, and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of Al-Mesiah Ad-Dajjal. O Allah! Wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from all the sins as a white garment is cleansed from the filth, and let there be a long distance between me and my sins, as You made East and West far from each other."

Bukhari 75.379

Muhammad warned how to tell that Ad-Dajjal does not speak for Allah.

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar:

Allah's Apostle stood up amongst the people and then praised and glorified Allah as He deserved and then he mentioned Ad-Dajjal, saying, "I warn you of him, and there was no prophet but warned his followers of him; but I will tell you something about him which no prophet has told his followers: Ad-Dajjal is one-eyed whereas Allah is not."

Bukhari 88.241

Ad-Dajjal actually has two eyes but is blind in one. For a false messiah, Muhammad emphasizes that he is not very bright, leaving a clear message between his seeing and blind eye that he is not who he pretends to be.

Narrated Anas:

The Prophet said, "Allah did not send any prophet but that he warned his nation of the one-eyed liar (Ad-Dajjal). He is one-eyed while your Lord is not one-eyed. The word 'Kafir' (unbeliever) is written between his two eyes."

Bukhari 93.505

Road access to both Mecca and Medina will be denied to Ad-Dajjal.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet said, "There will be no town which Ad-Dajjal will not enter except Mecca and Medina, and there will be no entrance (road) (of both Mecca and Medina) but the angels will be standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Medina will shake with its inhabitants thrice (i.e. three earth-quakes will take place) and Allah will expel all the nonbelievers and the hypocrites from it."

Bukhari 30.105

In one hadith, Ad-Dajjal sets up residence on salt flats next to Medina. How he got there, having been forbidden access to the mountain passes leading to the city, is not explained. He will try to impress his audience by killing a man and bringing him back to life, but Allah intervenes when he tries the same trick again.

Narrated Abu Sa'id:

One day Allah's Apostle narrated to us a long narration about Ad-Dajjal and among the things he narrated to us, was: "Ad-Dajjal will come, and he will be forbidden to enter the mountain passes of Medina. He will encamp in one of the salt areas neighboring Medina and there will appear to him a man who will be the best or one of the best of the people. He will say 'I testify that you are Ad-Dajjal whose story Allah's Apostle has told us.'

Ad-Dajjal will say (to his audience), 'Look, if I kill this man and then give him life, will you have any doubt about my claim?'

They will reply, 'No,'

Then Ad-Dajjal will kill that man and then will make him alive.

The man will say, 'By Allah, now I recognize you more than ever!'

Ad-Dajjal will then try to kill him (again) but he will not be given the power to do so."

Bukhari 88.246

Allah will limit Ad-Dajjal's influence in other ways.

Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba:

Nobody asked the Prophet as many questions as I asked regarding Ad-Dajjal.

The Prophet said to me, "What worries you about him?"

I said, "Because the people say that he will have a mountain of bread and a river of water with him (i.e. he will have abundance of food and water)"

The Prophet said, "Nay, he is too mean to be allowed such a thing by Allah"' (but it is only to test mankind whether they believe in Allah or in Ad-Dajjal.)

Bukhari 88.238

When you see Ad-Dajjal and he asks you to choose between the fire or the water he is carrying, chose fire. The following two hadiths explain why:

Narrated Hudhaifa:

The Prophet said about Ad-Dajjal that he would have water and fire with him: (what would seem to be) fire, would be cold water and (what would seem to be) water, would be fire.

Bukhari 88.244

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "Shall I not tell you about the Dajjal a story of which no prophet told his nation? The Dajjal is one-eyed and will bring with him what will resemble Hell and Paradise, and what he will call Paradise will be actually Hell; so I warn you (against him) as Noah warned his nation against him."

Bukhari 55.554

It's hard to believe that there will still be unbelievers in Medina when Ad-Dajjal shows up, for even today, only Muslims are allowed into the second most holy site in all of Islam after Mecca.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet said, "Ad-Dajjal will come and encamp at a place close to Medina and then Medina will shake thrice whereupon every Kafir (disbeliever) and hypocrite will go out (of Medina) towards him."

Bukhari 88.239

The safest place to be during the End Times battle between good and evil will be Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia.

Narrated Abu Bakra:

The Prophet said, "The terror caused by Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal will not enter Medina and at that time Medina will have seven gates and there will be two angels at each gate (guarding them)."

Bukhari 88.240

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "There are angels at the mountain passes of Medina (so that) neither plague nor Ad-Dajjal can enter it."

Bukhari 88.247

Before (or after) defeating Ad-Dajjal in the final battle of the End Times, Jesus will, among other things, kill all the pigs.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until the son of Mary (i.e. Jesus) descends amongst you as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the Jizya tax. Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it (as charitable gifts)."

Bukhari 43.656

During the End Times, Jesus will judge the living according to the Koran.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said "How will you be when the son of Mary (i.e. Jesus) descends amongst you and he will judge people by the Law of the Quran and not by the law of Gospel."

Bukhari 55.658
